About Taipei
Taipei, known officially as Taipei City, is the capital and a unique municipality in Taiwan. It's situated in the northern part of Taiwan and forms an enclave within New Taipei City, located roughly 25 km southwest of Keelung, a northern port city. Taipei mostly lies in the Taipei Basin, which was once an ancient lakebed. The city is surrounded by the Keelung and Xindian rivers' valleys, merging to create the Tamsui River along its western edge.
As of March 2023, Taipei's population is approximately 2.49 million, making it the central area of the Taipei-Keelung metropolitan region, also known as Greater Taipei. This wider area, including New Taipei and Keelung, has around 7.05 million people, housing about a third of Taiwan's population. "Taipei" can refer to either the entire metropolitan area or just the city itself. Taipei has been a political hub since 1887, serving as the administrative center of Taiwan Province under different governments, and has been the national capital since 1949. It was elevated from a provincial city to a special municipality in 1967.
Taipei stands as Taiwan's heart of economic, political, educational, and cultural activities and is recognized as a major global city. Classified as an Alpha − City, it's part of a significant high-tech industrial zone. The city boasts excellent connectivity with railways, highways, airports, and bus services. It is served by two airports: Songshan and Taoyuan. Taipei is also known for its architectural and cultural sites, such as Taipei 101, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, various temples, the National Palace Museum, and the Presidential Office Building. It has vibrant shopping areas like Ximending and numerous night markets, along with natural attractions like Maokong and Yangmingshan.
In international contexts, the name "Taipei" often represents Taiwan's central government. Owing to Taiwan's unique international status, "Chinese Taipei" is sometimes used, especially in international organizations or sports events like the Olympics, to refer to Taiwan.
