About Ayodhya

Ayodhya, located along the Sarayu river in Uttar Pradesh, India, serves as the administrative center for both the Ayodhya district and division. The city's management falls under the jurisdiction of the Ayodhya Municipal Corporation.

Formerly known as Saketa, Ayodhya has a rich historical background. It is mentioned in early Buddhist and Jain scriptures. These texts note that Gautama Buddha and Mahavira, significant figures in their respective religions, spent time in Ayodhya. Additionally, Jain scriptures recognize Ayodhya as the birthplace of five revered tirthankaras: Rishabhanatha, Ajitanatha, Abhinandananatha, Sumatinath, and Anantnath. The city is also linked with the legendary figure Bharata Chakravarti. From the Gupta dynasty onwards, Ayodhya and Saketa have been referred to interchangeably.

Ayodhya is famously identified as the birthplace of the Hindu deity Rama, a key figure in the Indian epic, Ramayana. This association has made Ayodhya one of the seven most significant pilgrimage destinations for Hindus. It is believed that a temple dedicated to Rama once stood at his birthplace. However, during the Mughal era, under the rule of either Babur or Aurangzeb, this temple was replaced with a mosque. In 1992, a conflict over this site led to the destruction of the mosque by Hindu groups, who planned to build a grand temple for Rama there. The Indian Supreme Court, after a detailed hearing in 2019, ruled that the land should be given to a trust for constructing a Hindu temple. Additionally, the court instructed that 5 acres of alternative land be provided to the Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board for mosque construction. The building of the Ram Mandir began in August 2020.
